The best shovel for installing landscaping rock, crusher fines, roadbase, and structural fill dirt is a square nose (flathead) shovel. The square nose makes it easier to get a shovel full compared to a round point shovel. Round point shovels work better for digging holes. To shovel mulch the best option is a scoop shovel. These can all be purchased new or used on several local and national web sites.
The best rake for all types of landscape material leveling is a bow rake. You can often find these at garage sales as well as on the Internet.

When buying and installing any type of 3/4" or 1-1/2" rock, the standard depth is 2 layers, not 2 inches like some other materials. A 2 layer depth of 3/4" rock give you an approximate average depth of 1-1/2". 2 layers of 1-1/2" rock will be approximate depth of 3 inches. We say approximately because the rocks vary slightly in size. When spread evenly it helps to create total darkness under the rock, which helps stop weeds and grass from growing up through it.

Most landscaping materials companies in Denver sell 2 or 3 different kinds of Local River. They range in color from bland to very colorful. We've never understood why this made sense. We only sell one kind, we feel it's the most attractive in Denver. Make sure when comparing our Multi-Color Local River Rock to any of theirs, that you know exactly which type of river rock you're pricing. Ask them to send you a recent picture of the rock wet, so you you can get an idea what it will look like when installed in your project. Once they dump it on your driveway, if it's the ugly river rock, you're stuck with it. Landscaping costs too much to do it wrong.
To Order the Correct Amount of Material
Measure the length and width of the area to be covered. If you don’t have a tape measure, walk the length and width of the area. Figure each full step as 2 1/2 feet. Get the total square footage of the area by multiplying the length by the width.
30 feet by 40 feet = 1200 square feet. 1 ton of Recycled Asphalt Roadbase covers 80 square feet 2 inches deep. 1200 divided by 80 = 15. You will need 15 tons of Recycled Asphalt to cover this area approximately 2 inches deep.
Please note: This is only a rough indication of the amount of material you may need. Actual dimensions may vary due to irregularities in soil types and established rough grade.
