We disagree with their recommendation for footing material (5/8 inch crushed rock) but the group that produced this video is in Washington state. The receive more than 50 inches of rain per year. In the front range of Colorado the best 2 products are granite or river rock crusher fines and Class 1 structural fill dirt.

Please call us if you need more information on these or any other products.

Washed Concrete Sand – Sand covers 100 square feet 2 inches deep. Our sand is a medium size course particle sand that holds up to frequent use very well. The Colorado State University Equine Department advises that no more than 3 inches of sand should be used in an arena or roundpen and you may want to start with just 2 inches. Some disciplines like cutting horses and dressage often prefer it deeper. Too much sand can injure your horse. It is much easier to add more material than to remove it.

Squeegee – covers 100 square feet 2 inches deep. Squeegee is the material size between sand and pea gravel. It is 1/4″ minus rock which means the largest pieces are 1/4″ down to minus, which is 20-25% sand. Squeegee isn’t often used alone, most often in combination with sand. The most common blend is 25% squeegee to 75% sand. We have had customers that used 50% of each material and are happy with it.

Heavy daily use of the arenas and roundpens by multiple horses can break the sand down and it will become dusty. This is natural, just as every so often your car needs new brakes or tires, your horse riding and exercise areas will need new sand. At that point you can add another inch or so of sand or use squeegee instead.

The amount of sand or squeegee needed to achieve average depths is as follows:

Class 1 Structural Fill Dirt – 1 ton covers 100 square feet 2 inches deep, prior to compaction.

Class 1 Structural Fill Dirt is a very versatile product that can be used for many different projects in and around your property. It works best as a base for new or reworked stalls; to correct drainage, under new arenas or roundpens where the existing soil is clay or light Sand. Building foundation drainage, under portable sheds or storage containers and much more.

Granite or River Rock Equine Crusher Fines – 1 ton covers 100 square feet 2 inches deep.

Crusher Fines are 1/4″ minus. The largest particles are 1/4″ down to the fines. It does compact, but not very much. The is the best top layer material for stalls, pens and paddocks. It drains very well, it’s easy to clean, it compacts but always seems soft. It is very easy on your horse’s hooves, whether they’re shod or barefoot. There is no difference between the Granite or River Rock Fines. The Granite is produced in Denver, the River Rock on the north end of the metro area.

Pea Gravel – 1 ton covers 100 square feet 2 inches deep. It is a decorative material that can be used for loosening up hard soil in the base of an arena or roundpen. We have had people use it in stalls, under mats. We also have customers that have used it for open barnyard and trailer parking areas to give it a distinct look. It really looked nice.

Class 6 Granite Roadbase – 1 ton covers 80 square feet 2 inches deep. It must be compacted. Granite Roadbase is the best material for all trailer parking areas, barnyards and driveways. It compacts, it stays compacted, it drains well, both over the top and down through it. It must be installed at least 2 inches deep, but probably not more than 4 inches deep. The average depth is 3 inches and should last 4-6 years and with any maintenance at all, longer than that. It is a very good investment in your property.

We deliver Monday through Friday and while we can often deliver the same day you order it, you should schedule it a day or so before it is needed to be sure we can get it to you. Especially if your project requires multiple loads.

We sell washed concrete sand which is suitable for roundpens and horse arenas.

It is a medium size course sand particle that holds up to most uses very well.

You do not want over 3 inches of sand in the arena or roundpen and you may want to start with a 2 inch lift. Too much sand can injure your horse. It is much easier to add more material than to remove it.

Squeegee is 1/4 inch minus rock with 20 – 30 percent sand in it. Squeegee covers 100 square feet 2 inches deep per ton, the same coverage as sand.

Squeegee is the material sized between sand and pea gravel. While some arenas and roundpens add up to 50 percent squeegee, most of the time it is a better idea to start with 25 – 30 percent.

The amount of sand or squeegee needed to achieve average depths is as follows.
  • Sand and squeegee both cover 100 square feet, 2 inches deep, per ton.
  • The ground should be graded with a slight downhill slope to help with drainage.
  • Most sand and squeegee is delivered in 15 ton truck
    loads.
  • The delivery price is the same whether you get 12, 13.50 or 15 tons delivered.
  • You will have to decide, based on your budget, if its is less expensive to buy a little more than you need and get a full truckload so you’ll have a little extra either for the arena or roundpen in the near future or only buy as close as you can to the exact amount you need.
You need 96 tons for an average depth of 2 inches, You will need 144 tons for a 3 inch average depth. Calculations are shown below.

To Order the Correct Amount of Material

Measure the length and width of the area to be covered. If you don’t have a tape measure, walk the length and width of the area. Figure each full step as 2 1/2 feet. Get the total square footage of the area by multiplying the length by the width.

30 feet by 40 feet = 1200 square feet. 1 ton of Recycled Asphalt Roadbase covers 80 square feet 2 inches deep. 1200 divided by 80 = 15. You will need 15 tons of Recycled Asphalt to cover this area approximately 2 inches deep.

Please note: This is only a rough indication of the amount of material you may need. Actual dimensions may vary due to irregularities in soil types and established rough grade.
